Glyphs Guide

Glyphs are active weapon abilities in Hell is Us — the offensive counterpart to passive relics. Each weapon can equip up to three glyphs once it reaches Grade 2, mapped to face buttons plus the Lymbic modifier (L2 on PlayStation, LT on Xbox, number keys 1–3 on PC). Activating a glyph spends Lymbic energy, a resource regenerated by landing hits, stealing from enemies, or using Lymbic consumables. Mastering glyphs separates smooth Timeloop clears from stamina-starved whiff fests.

There are fifteen unique glyph types across the campaign, each appearing in three power tiers: default, Enhanced, and Elite. That yields 75 total collectible glyphs, though you only equip three per weapon at a time. A weapon’s Lymbic sphere — Rage, Grief, Terror, Ecstasy, or Neutral — restricts which glyphs fit: an Ecstasy sword accepts Neutral glyphs or Ecstasy glyphs only, never Rage abilities.

How glyphs work in combat

Open the Datapad loadout screen to assign glyphs. In battle, hold L2/LT and press Square/X/1 for slot one, Triangle/Y/2 for slot two, Cross/A/3 for slot three. Your active relic occupies the fourth L2 slot and persists across weapon swaps.

Plan energy budgets before boss attempts. Expensive glyphs chained back-to-back can drain Lymbic mid-combo, leaving you unable to finish stance breaks. Cheap engagement glyphs — quick stuns or gap closers — pair well with heavy finishers on a second weapon from the best loadouts guide.

Notable glyph families by emotion

Rage glyphs

Rage Spike, Berserk, and Animosity anchor polearm burst setups. They excel against groups tethered to non-Rage Haze when you already wield a Polearm of Rage. Berserk-style effects amplify damage at the cost of defensive windows — Merciless players should practice dodge i-frames first on console controls.

Terror glyphs

Frightful Ambush, Feed on Fear, and Recoil define twin axes terror builds highlighted in community tier lists. Feed on Fear rewards aggression against fear-vulnerable Hollows, refilling energy after panic chains. IGN notes Ambush as a strong single-target re-engage after retreating — combine with Distract drone module to isolate elites.

Grief and Ecstasy glyphs

Less common in early loadouts but mandatory in late Timeloops when enemy emotions rotate. Keep a leveled Grief greatsword or Ecstasy sword in your secondary slot even if axes remain your primary DPS. Vault rewards in Lake Cynon and Lethe often gate Enhanced tiers — cross-reference vault codes when sequences block progression.

Neutral glyphs

Flexible but rarely best-in-slot. Useful on backup swords when you cannot predict the next region’s Haze palette. Neutral options shine during mixed add waves before you identify tether colors.

Enhanced vs Elite upgrades

Enhanced glyphs drop from standard mysteries, Timeloops, and chests. Elite versions hide in late-game zones — Auriga Museum wings, Marastan OMSIF houses, and drone workshop rewards. Elite tiers increase damage, reduce Lymbic cost, or extend crowd-control duration. Farming Elite glyphs is optional for story completion but recommended before Merciless cleanup.

Track duplicates carefully: equipping the wrong tier wastes slots. Compare numbers in the loadout tooltip before long backtracking routes.

Greatsword stun builds synergize with drone Shockwave modules documented on the drone modules page — break stance with a glyph, then drone finisher.

Acquisition tips

Glyphs arrive through Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge, Timeloop completions, Good Deeds, and optional combat arenas. No quest markers point to them; Datapad Investigations and environmental clues lead the way. If a glyph room stays sealed, verify you solved the region’s emotion puzzle or keypad — return to the Codes Hub for numeric locks.

Common mistakes

Mixing incompatible spheres — the loadout screen grays out illegal glyphs, but players sometimes upgrade the wrong weapon grade and wonder why slots stay empty. Ignoring Lymbic theft stats — polearms steal more energy per hit than swords; adjust glyph costs accordingly. Duplicating drone stuns — if Distract already locks an enemy, over-casting Ambush wastes energy.

Patch awareness

Post-launch patches adjusted weapon damage values tied to certain glyph procs. After updates listed on patch news, retest your Act II loadout against a familiar Timeloop before committing to New Game Plus.

Quick answers about Hell is Us progression, combat, and exploration.

How many glyphs can each weapon equip?
