Mysteries Guide

Beyond main Investigations, Hell is Us tracks 43 Mysteries — optional Datapad threads triggered by drone scans, environmental anomalies, APC research, and NPC rumors. Mysteries differ from Good Deeds (NPC errands with explicit titles) and from Timeloops (shimmering domes with guardians). They often gate Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge, Elite Glyphs, Relics, and lore tablets that explain Hadea’s collapse. This guide explains how Mysteries appear, how to pursue them without a map, and where to look when a thread stalls — without listing every solution on one page.

How Mysteries appear on the Datapad

Open the Datapad and select the Mysteries tab after Ren receives the research upgrade on the APC. New entries unlock when:

  • Your KAPI drone scans a highlighted object (statue, corpse, broken relay, mural fragment).
  • You pick up research samples Tania can analyze between missions.
  • An Investigation objective mentions an unresolved anomaly nearby.
  • You discover a Vault of Forbidden Knowledge entrance without yet knowing its emotion sequence.

Each Mystery entry includes a title, region hint, and progress states (discovered → researched → resolved). Unlike main Investigations, Mysteries rarely force waypoint text — you must correlate landmarks using No-Map Exploration habits.

Mystery categories you will see

Most Mysteries fall into repeating templates:

TypeTypical triggerReward
Environmental scan chainsSequential drone scans on ruinsLore tablets, Glyph materials
Vault precursorsHidden door with emotion locksVault access, Elite loot
NPC rumor threadsAPC dialogue after actsResearch keys, deed follow-ups
Lymbic Entity huntsPost-timeloop anomaliesGuardian Detector pings (patch 1.7+)
Ministry / Auriga archivesB4-adjacent roomsSafe codes, computer passwords

Recognizing the template prevents wandering — if a Mystery mentions “forbidden vault,” pivot to Codes Hub and vault codes instead of rereading walkthrough prose.

Approach without spoiling every solution

Use this three-pass method on any stuck Mystery:

  1. Rescan the anchor area at day/night if lighting changes silhouettes. Many Mysteries hide second scan points behind breakable barricades.
  2. Return to Tania on the APC after every major Investigation chapter. She converts field samples into research tiers that flip Mystery states from inactive to actionable.
  3. Cross-reference puzzles before codes — if the Mystery mentions statues, plates, or flowers, open Puzzle Solutions for spoiler boxes only after manual searching fails.

Avoid opening full solution pages for regions you have not reached; walkthrough order matters for sanity, not hard locks.

Tania research and vault access

Tania acts as the in-fiction research lead. When a Mystery stalls on “insufficient data,” leave the field, complete the nearest main Investigation beat, and speak with her again. Research unlocks:

  • Vault emotion sequences (Rage, Grief, Terror, Ecstasy, Neutral chains) documented on vault codes.
  • Guardian Detector upgrades — especially relevant after patch 1.7 when hunting remaining Lymbic Entities for Legend of the Phol post-timeloop cleanup.
  • Hints that mirror safe and terminal passwords on safe and computer codes.

Vault Mysteries almost always require both a field scan chain and a Tania research step before the door accepts input.

Mysteries versus Timeloops and Good Deeds

  • Timeloops (14 total) — combat domes closed with Amine Prisms after guardians fall. See Good Deeds & Timeloops.
  • Good Deeds (26 total) — explicit NPC tasks; several are missable. See Missables & Platinum.
  • Mysteries (43 total) — exploration and research threads; fewer hard missables but some vaults become inconvenient if you finish Act 3 first.

Completing all three systems is what separates a story finish from 100% exploration credit.

Regional pacing tips

Act 1 — Senedra, Watcher’s Nest, Lake Cynon: Mysteries teach scan chains in ruins and marshes. Finish local Mysteries before inserting the Keystone of Grief — see Act 1 Walkthrough.

Act 2 — Marastan, Arcas Spire, Jeljin, Auriga, Plains of Mist: Density spikes. After each Keystone leg, sweep the region’s Mysteries before boarding the APC to the next hub. Act 2 Walkthrough notes mandatory timeloops versus optional Mystery vaults.

Act 3 — Into the Unknown: Few brand-new Mysteries spawn; most cleanup refers back to Hadea hubs if your save still allows travel.

Track act milestones on the Exploration Checklist to avoid losing count mid-campaign.

Tools when text clues fail

  • Code Finder — filter numeric locks tied to Mystery locations.
  • Codes Hub — door PINs separate from environmental puzzles.
  • Tier List — prioritize Elite rewards from vault Mysteries.

Legend of the Phol and late Mysteries

Several endgame Mysteries reference Legend of the Phol and remaining Lymbic Entities after the Timeloop arc closes. Patch 1.7 improved Guardian Detector to highlight stragglers — equip the module before sweeping Hadea on a cleanup pass. This ties into platinum hunting on Missables & Platinum but remains optional for story-only players.
