Hell is Us Combat & Healing Pulse
Weapons, Glyphs, Relics, Drone Modules, and staying alive without medkits.
Combat in Hell is Us ties melee weapon mastery to the Healing Pulse — a skill-based heal triggered after successful attacks. Hollow enemies, timeloop guardians, and Act bosses all assume you can recover mid-fight without spamming medkits. This guide covers weapon families, Glyphs, Relics, Drone Modules, and the pulse timing that separates smooth runs from APC backtracking.
Core combat loop
- Engage with your primary weapon combo.
- Build white particles and a gray healable segment on your health bar.
- When the bar flashes white, press RB (Xbox) or R1 (PlayStation) to Healing Pulse.
- Dodge or parry during wind-up — taking damage cancels the pulse.
- Swap weapons or trigger Glyphs when stagger windows open.
Pressing pulse too early during a combo consumes the charge without healing. Wait for the flash or waist ring cue.
Weapon families
Sword
Balanced reach and speed — ideal for learning enemy tells. Strong light combos build pulse meter steadily. Recommended for Act 1 and players new to soullike timing.
Polearm
Extra range keeps groups at bay, excellent in trenches and B4 gauntlets. Slightly slower recovery — pulse after the third hit of safe combos, not during thrust wind-up.
Twin axes
Fastest cadence and highest DPS if you master dodging. Fragile if you get hit during spin attacks. Pair with Relics that reduce stagger damage.
Greatsword
Heavy stagger and hyper-armor on charged hits. Best against elite Hollows and Act 2 guardians. Slow swings mean fewer pulse windows — make each flash count.
Carry two families with different reach profiles. Swap mid-fight using loadout controls on the Datapad.
Healing Pulse deep dive
Successful hits generate luminous particles around Remi. Multiple hits in one combo accumulate a larger heal. Kills also advance the meter — clearing trash mobs before pulsing is a valid tactic.
Cancellation rules:
- Enemy hit during wind-up → pulse lost.
- Early RB/R1 during combo → charge wasted, no heal.
- Waiting too long after flash → particles dissipate.
Practice on Act 1 Hollow packs before Senedra exits. Watch the health bar, not only the waist ring — the white flash is the most reliable cue on console.
Medkits remain instant heals but are scarce. Use them for boss phase transitions when pulse windows disappear.
Glyphs
Glyphs are weapon-bound abilities triggered with LT/L2 plus face buttons. Acquire them from timeloops, vaults, Good Deeds, and exploration. Each Glyph has standard, Enhanced, and Elite tiers.
Loadout tips:
- Slot one damage Glyph and one utility or guard Glyph per weapon.
- Enhanced Guard and Lymbic Mending variants support pulse-heavy playstyles.
- Elite Glyphs like Fury or Perfect Guard define late-game builds — see Tier List as rankings stabilize.
Glyphs respect weapon affinity — some effects only attach to swords or polearms. Read slot compatibility in the Loadout menu before farming duplicates.
Relics
Relics passively modify stats, pulse healing, stagger resistance, or Lymbic regen. Many come from Good Deeds and tomb puzzles like the Watcher’s Nest reward. Relics stack with weapon upgrades — prioritize survivability Relics if you miss pulse timing often.
Drone Modules
Eight module families (with upgraded variants) add combat utility: distracts, scans during fight, or deploys area effects. Trigger modules through drone commands assigned in Loadout. Modules shine in Ecstasy add waves and Act 3 swarm rooms where pure melee cannot control space.
Scan modules remain valuable outside combat — see No-Map Exploration.
Enemy types and tactics
- Standard Hollows — pulse after every safe combo; practice here.
- Shielded units — break guard with greatsword heavies or Glyph stagger.
- Timeloop guardians — telegraphed heavies; pulse only after their combo ends.
- Boss phases — destroy spawn structures first (Ecstasy pattern), then DPS the core during stagger.
Synergy with exploration systems
Closing timeloops and finishing Good Deeds feeds Glyph and Relic drops used in combat — see Good Deeds & Timeloops. Under-geared characters should farm loops in Act 1 Lake Cynon before Act 2 B4.
